Oral Health Education/Care Co-ordinator Course

A short course open to any experience person in the team
Oral Health Educators/Care Co-ordinators [anyone in the Practice Team] give Oral Health Education and also help to

  1. increase patients’ understanding of procedures
  2. take pressure off dentists/hygienists

This Course is offered over 24 weeks [weekly, one evening a week]. it is normally held on Wednesday evenings 7.00 - 9.00 pm at Ranelagh School, Bracknell, RG12 9DA.

Due to the large number of NEBDN National Certificate Students, this Course is not running. However, if you would like to declare your interest, we can let you know when it next runs. Also, if there are a lot of interested people, we may be able to put a Course on sooner rather than later. The OHE course has been restructured to train Care Co-ordinators as well as Oral Health Educators] to help maximise your practice’s productivity/profits. Care Co-ordinators can be anyone in the Practice Team.

Previously the course was geared exclusively to the requirements of the NEBDN OHE qualification, that is, qualified DNs giving Oral Health Education to patients. The tutors will now also teach any experienced person in the team.

Topics covered include dental diseases and their prevention, theories of education and its practical application within the surgery, Sociology. Staff can

  1. meet with new patients before treatment starts or talk to them on the telephone and can knowledgeably raise awareness of available treatment
  2. see patients after treatment and can knowledgeably give oral health education
    and importantly can document that the patient has received the advice
  3. go through costings with the patient
  4. create posters, Oral Health Education, or “treatment available” displays to be displayed in surgeries or waiting-rooms
  5. additionally explain how the practice works [eg: recall system, opening hours, giving out information leaflets etc]
  6. utilise this knowledge and their communication skills to increase their personal satisfaction in their work

The tutors emphasise that, at all times, staff should support the treatments recommended by the dentists and hygienists.

The importance of informed consent is emphasised.

The course includes the full NEBDN syllabus and for qualified DNs [the NEBDN only allow qualified DNs who are registered with the GDC to sit their examination] leads to The Certificate in Oral Health Education awarded by the NEBDN. This qualifies the student to undertake Oral Health Education within the practice. The NEBDN OHE Examination is on the 3rd Sat of every Sept and March

After passing the examination, candidates will be awarded certificates by the NEBDN.

After satisfactorily completing the course, students will be awarded certificates of attendance.

These certificates can be displayed at your practice.
